Decrease joint pain naturally. Build Collagen. Healthy arteries and veins. Glucosamine Sulphate re-introduced!

Dr Agger, Portland Chiropractor, gets to see and read many different peer reviewed journals to keep current on the best natural treatments for his patients. As a Leading Portland Nutritionist, he works with other doctors, graduate students and leading researchers to refine treatments for patients suffering from wear and tear on their bodies, often on their joints, heart, arteries and veins.

Glucosamine Sulphate, long touted and researched to have effects on decreasing joint pain, theoretically by protecting cartilage between our joints, while providing good starting materials for our bodies to build collagen to keep our muscles, tendons and ligaments strong, has recently been in the news.

The new facts published in the British Medical Journal, are that Glucosamine Sulphate has been been statistically significant in reducing vascular injuries, such as strokes, aneurysms and heart failure. This caught the headlines because it was a reasonably large ( nearly half a million people ) study over a period of 7 years, taking glucosamine sulphate. It reduced ‘vascular events’ in the general population by 15%.

In this large prospective study, habitual glucosamine use was associated with a 15% lower risk of total CVD events and a 9%-22% lower risk of individual cardiovascular events (CVD death, CHD, and stroke). Such associations were independent of traditional risk factors, including sex, age, income, body mass index, physical activity, healthy diet, alcohol intake, smoking status, diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, arthritis, drug use, and other supplement use.”

Dr Agger’s take: This study makes sense, as Glucosamine Sulphate provides the building blocks needed to build cartilage and develop collagen. Collagen is responsible for the repair and elasticity of your arteries, veins and heart, as well as your joints. We don’t know how much Glucosamine every day these people in this study took, we just know that they took it on a regular basis. We don’t know if they all took Glucosamine Sulphate, or other forms of Glucosamine, such as Glucosamine hydrochloride, or Glucosamine with Chondroitin.

We know that most research has been done with Glucosamine Sulphate, and that it builds up in the body tissues after 3 -4 months so you don’t need to take as much daily/weekly. ( Similar to Boswellia supplements in this way ).

We know that the standard dosage is 500mg 3x/day for an 180# person. More if over #200, less if under 140#.

This would be between 2-4 pills a day for 3 months, before ramping down to appropriate maintenance dosages.

My best source of Glucosamine is Glucosamine Synergy from Standard Process, http://www.standardprocess.com/Products/Standard-Process/Glucosamine-Synergy#.XQB-CYtZ17c which gives 500mg of Glucosamine Sulphate/pill, with some Collagen, bone and connective tissue support including carbamide and Boswellic acids.
